about

This is a collection of excerpts from my short-lived but incredibly popular radio program "Into the Wood" which existed as a program for SAIC free internet radio from September 2021 to April 2022.

Each episode of the program was an hour-long improvisation on a collection of synthesizers and acoustic instruments. I would get a sound or two going and then start recording and just play for an hour, and that would be the episode. This exercise ended up feeling a lot like a meditation, which I enjoyed very much about the process. I've never made music so freely, and the results were always surprising and sometimes pleasant. The title is a reference to the Ciat Lonbarde synthesizers I use to make the show, which are circuit boards built into wooden enclosures. The show is largely an investigation "into" these "wood"-en instruments, so it felt like an appropriately descriptive title for what the show is, while also stealing some cachet from being almost the title of a play.

The full series is twenty-five episodes and is available on streaming services. I couldn't help but think that most people would not be interested in listening to 25 hours of idiosyncratic improvised electronic music, so I wanted to share certain moments from each episode so that a broader audience might be able to enjoy some of the finer moments from the show, and get a sense of what the full show was. What I've cut it down to is still extremely long. Maybe too long. It's a little like walking through a series of large rooms in slow motion. Hopefully you enjoy being in those rooms. I would suggest listening to this album on a long walk, or bike ride, or razor scooter ride, or whatever, in headphones, LOUD.

Thank you for listening, please enjoy.

Thank you to SAIC Free Radio for existing and thus generating the energy which brought this music into existence. It's amazing what kind of things you can make when you're trying to fill an hour with interesting music.
